m8-jenny "Redo" song track art

provocation

In her Movement 8, Jenny wrote a song, “Redo,” about the possibility and desirability of doing your life differently

Jenny made another song that asks: What would happen if you got a redo in your life? It pinged images in my mind that needed to be full of movement. How to visualize the forward and backward motions of time shifts? Again I turned to Splice to explore. Using similar drawing and filming strategies as with The Body and The Story of The Body, here is the result.

Text

Another aspect of the song that I tried to express visually was around the layering of lives, of lives intertwined. It brought to mind the warp and weft that is found in woven cloth. Coming from two different directions, a powerful third is created. This is true for the result of weaving, and it is true for lives lived in community. It is also true of this Helices collaboration! DNA is made of two strands connected along its length, and as Jenny says in the song, all the elements of a life are intertwined – can’t separate the “good” from the “bad”. Redo prompted all these reflections. The moving lines in the video, and the weaving of two images were the resulting visual response. I chose to use a lunar calendar and the copy of a drawing made some time back as the warp and weft. I liked that the lunar calendar marks time and rotation. I am less sure why I used the old drawing, but it is an anomalous drawing that came from trusting intuition and expresses an animistic relationship to plants which feels like it was a way marker for me to come back to at this time in life. Another way to think about redos. Is it a redo when we pick up and work with a thread that we laid down but did not understand at the time?

Another visual element in the video are the clay Subjects. They were made as part of the Intersubject Series. The clay objects act as subjects who, in relation to another, form an intersubjective space. Jessica Benjamin talks about that space as being the Shared Third. It is in that third that the two subjects create an energetic interactive and dynamic third presence. I chose to use these subjects in the video to mirror the affirmation of the value of staying put in the Thirds created in this life.
